DESCRIPTION:Basic Defensive Handgun – Ladies Only taught by a Female Instructor  \nBasic Defensive Handgun is a practical classroom and hands-on class in the use of a handgun in self- defense. Jeff Cooper\, the legendary founder of Gunsite Academy\, is quoted as having said\, “Owning a handgun doesn’t make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician.” Although marksmanship skill is critical to the ability to use a handgun in self-defense\, marksmanship alone is not sufficient. \nThis class addresses the basic information\, skills\, and situations relating to the use of a handgun as a self-defense tool. The class provides an overview of the legal\, psychological\, and law-enforcement response issues. (These are also covered in greater depth a separate Indy Arms classroom courses; Essentials of Indiana Gun Law\, Fundamentals of Armed Self-Defense\, and USCCA Concealed Carry) \nThis class focuses on the fundamental safety\, marksmanship and manipulation skills required to use a handgun effectively. (Carrying\, drawing\, and the associated equipment are covered in a separate Indy Arms hands-on course\, Tactical Handgun I\, II\, and III.) This course will consist of about 2 ½ hours of classroom and “dry” handling and drills\, and about 1 ½ hours of live-fire range time. The class is nominally four hours in length\, but may sometimes run a little run longer\, depending on attendance and the number of questions. \nThis class has been developed by experts on Indy Arms staff\, including nationally recognized authors and presenters\, and career firearms instructors and law-enforcement trainers. SUMMARY:Introduction to Rifle
DESCRIPTION:Interested in learning how to shoot a rifle (specifically AR (ArmaLite Rifle)-15’s)? \nIntroduction to Rifle is a basic course designed for people with little or no firearms experience. This course will provide a safe and enjoyable first exposure to long guns (rifles) and shooting. \nThis class is divided into two sessions. The classroom session\, lasting 60 to 75 minutes\, allows students to learn the fundamentals of rifle shooting including safety\, basic functions\, loading and unloading\, mounting\, stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control. During the live-fire session\, students will have the opportunity to handle\, load\, and fire one of our training AR-15s chambered in .22 caliber and will fire up to 50 rounds of ammunition in order to build skill and competence. The course concludes with a wrap-up session in the classroom to review lessons learned and answer any questions that students may have. \nThe class is offered one or two times a month and is the recommended first step before taking out Basic Defensive Rifle class. SUMMARY:Tactical Rifle 1
DESCRIPTION:Tactical Rifle 1 is an informational and hands-on class in the use of the modern semi-automatic rifle as a home defense weapon and extends the training provided in Indy Arms’ Basic Defensive Rifle course. Tactical Rifle 1 moves beyond basic accuracy and safety to include use of force for home defense\, shooting from cover\, multiple target engagement\, and shooting and moving. The class is based on the most common self-defense rifles\, of which the AR15 platform is the overwhelmingly dominant example. The Ruger Mini-14 (based on the Garand platform) and the AK family of rifles (commonly but incorrectly referred to as the AK47) are also suitable for the class (if you are bringing a rifle other than an AR15 platform\, please inform Indy Arms when you register for the class). \nTactical Rifle 1 includes lecture\, dry fire and live-fire sessions and can be shot with both iron sights and with optics if those are available. This course will consist of about 2 hours of classroom material and practice\, and about 2 hours of live-fire range time. The class is nominally four hours in length\, but sometimes runs a bit longer\, based on student questions. \nStudents will shoot 200 rounds of ammunition. \nCourse Goal\n“To begin the structured development of the fundamental skills required to comfortably and effectively use a semi-auto rifle for home/personal defense\, and to provide the student with techniques and exercises to develop and refine these skills.” \nLessons \n\nBasic Rifle\, Home\, and Range Safety\nCommon Malfunctions\nSpeed loading\nMultiple shots and multiple targets\nMoving and scanning\nUse of cover\nReview and Questions\n\nPrerequisites: Students taking Tactical Rifle 1 should have an understanding of simple marksmanship\, and the basic operation of their rifle. DESCRIPTION:USCCA Concealed Carry\n\nThe USCCA Concealed Carry class is a defensive handgun course for those who carry\, or are considering carrying\, a handgun for self-defense. \nThe United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) is one of the preeminent training organizations in the country providing Concealed Carry Handgun and Home Defense classes\, and a broad range of superb training publications\, videos\, and on-line programs.  The USCCA also provides a range of excellent self-defense firearm legal insurance programs.  Indy Arms is proud to currently have five USCCA-certified firearms instructors (and three USCCA Training Counselors) on our training staff (and all of those instructors are also certified by other major training organizations\, including the National Rifle Association\, Tactical Training Associates\, and the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy). \nUSCCA Concealed Carry is an informational and hands-on class in the carrying and use of a handgun in self-defense.  Jeff Cooper\, the legendary founder of Gunsite Academy\, is credited with saying\, “Owning a handgun doesn’t make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician.”  This class is meant to address that issue by providing some of the basic knowledge and skills that will contribute to your being effectively armed. \nThe class covers firearms handling safety\, range safety\, and personal safety.  We summarize the legal\, psychological\, and law-enforcement response issues involved in using a firearm for self-defense.  (And for those wanting more information\, these topics are covered in extreme detail in a separate Indy Arms classroom course\, Fundamentals of Armed Self-Defense.)  We practice basic handling\, operation\, and shooting skills with training guns\, “dry” in the classroom.  And the course concludes with live-fire session on the range allowing students to train with their own defensive handgun (rentals available) through a series of defensive drills. \nThis course will consist of about 4.5 hours of classroom material and practice\, and about 1.5 hours of live-fire range time but sometimes runs a bit longer\, based on student questions. \nThe class will include the use of a rental gun at no additional cost.  Students should bring 125 rounds of practice ammo for their gun of choice. \nCourse Goal \n“To allow the student to experience first-hand some of the skills and challenges inherent in the use of a firearm in self-defense\, and to provide information and basics that will allow the student to practice and improve those skills.” \nLessons \n\nDeveloping a Personal Protection Plan\nSelf-Defense Firearms Basics\nDefensive Shooting Fundamentals\nThe Legal Use of Force\nViolent Encounters and Their Aftermath\nGear and Gadgets\nSuggestions for Practicing Basic and Advanced Skills\n\nPrerequisites: None. This course will consist of about 2 ½ hours of classroom and “dry” handling and drills\, and about 1 ½ hours of live-fire range time. DESCRIPTION:Basic Defensive Rifle\nBasic Defensive Rifle is an informational and hands-on class in the use of the modern semi-automatic rifle as a home defense weapon. The class is based on the most common self-defense rifles\, of which the AR15 platform is the overwhelmingly dominant example. The Ruger Mini-14 (based on the Garand platform) and the AK family of rifles (commonly but incorrectly referred to as the AK47) are also suitable for the class (if you are bringing a rifle other than an AR15 platform\, please inform Indy Arms when you register for the class). \nRifles are extremely effective home self-defense weapons\, and they have both advantages and limitations. These need to be understood and respected to use the rifle effectively and safely. \nRifle handling safety\, range safety\, and safe storage are addressed. We will go through the basic operating systems of these platforms\, and the most common malfunctions. We will practice basic handling\, operation\, loading and unloading with dummy ammunition in the classroom\, and proper mounting of the rifle and use of the sights. The course concludes with live-fire session on the range\, shot at various distances and speeds. And can be shot with both iron sights and with optics if those are available. It is important to have usable iron sights on the firearm. Optics can be finicky\, depend on batteries\, and can sometimes be difficult to dial in. \nThis course will consist of about 2 ½ hours of classroom material and practice\, and about 1 ½ hours of live-fire range time. DESCRIPTION:Tactical Handgun I is the first of a series of three Tactical Handgun classes that address the essential skills required to use a handgun as an effective self-defense tool. Basic marksmanship ability and an understanding of the rule of law governing the use of force in self-defense are certainly a necessary part of this skill set. But for those seeking serious competence\, a much broader set of abilities is required. Each of the three Tactical Handgun classes builds on the skills and techniques taught and practiced in the preceding classes.  \nThe class will consist of about 2.5 hours of classroom time and 1.5 hours of live-fire range time. \nThe class requires 150 rounds of ammunition. \nCourse Goal: To begin the structured development of the fundamental skills required to comfortably and effectively carry and use a handgun for personal defense\, and to provide the student with techniques and exercises to develop and refine these skills. \nLessons \n\n Legal Framework of Defensive Handgun Use\nHandgun and Ammunition Selection and Options\nDrawing from your Carry Holster or Carry Purse\nBasic Defensive Live-Fire\nEssential Malfunction Clearing\nSpeed Reloading\nScanning and Simple Movement\n\nPrerequisites: Students taking Tactical Pistol I should have an understanding of simple marksmanship\, and the basic operation of their handgun. Individuals taking this class should have the personal handgun that they intend to use/carry for personal defense\, along with a suitable outside-the-waistband holster or carry purse with a dedicated department for firearms carry. Indy Arms Basic Defensive Handgun\, and/or USCCA Concealed Carry Handgun are acceptable prerequisites\, as are most classes from recognized shooting schools. Experienced shooters who have not taken any formal classes should contact Indy Arms to make arrangements to drop by for a brief skills checkout. DESCRIPTION:Pepper Spray and Taser\n\nand other Non-Firearms Defensive Options\nOne of the questions that often comes up in defensive firearms training is\, “What other tools besides firearms are useful for self-defense?” One of the two best and most accessible non-firearms defensive tools are Pepper Spray (technically called OC Spray) and Tasers. But just buying a can of Pepper Spray or a tazer and putting it in your purse or pocket is not really preparing for self-defense. DESCRIPTION:Interested in learning how to safely shoot a pump-action shotgun? \nIntroduction to Shotgun is a basic course designed for people with little or no firearms experience. This course will provide a safe and enjoyable first exposure to long guns (shotguns) and shooting. \nThis class is divided into two sessions. The classroom session\, lasting 60 to 75 minutes\, allows students to learn the fundamentals of shotgun shooting including safety\, basic functions\, loading and unloading\, mounting\, stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control. During the live-fire session\, students will have the opportunity to handle\, load\, and fire one of our training pump-action shotguns chambered in 20 gauge and will fire up to 20 rounds of ammunition in order to build skill and competence. The course concludes with a wrap-up session in the classroom to review lessons learned and answer any questions that students may have. \nThe class is offered once a month and is the recommended first step before taking out Basic Defensive Shotgun class. Could you prolong the life of a loved one long enough for the ambulance to arrive\, if he or she had sustained a lacerated artery from a violent attacker armed with a knife? While most Americans are comfortable dealing with the cuts and scrapes of everyday life\, and tens of thousands have learned the Heimlich maneuver and CPR\, most individuals would be a bit less comfortable dealing with severe\, life-threatening injuries or illnesses when seconds count and EMS personnel and the emergency room are minutes (or longer) away. \nIt might seem unrealistic to compare what professional EMTs and paramedics are able to do with the things that non-professionals would be capable of\, but in life threatening medical and trauma situations it all boils down to the same thing — sustaining the life of the patient until he or she can be delivered to the emergency room. \nThe United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) is one of the preeminent training organizations in the country providing Concealed Carry Handgun and Home Defense classes\, and a broad range of superb training publications\, videos\, and on-line programs. The USCCA also provides a range of excellent self-defense firearm legal insurance programs. Each of the four Tactical Handgun classes builds on the skills and techniques taught and practiced in the preceding classes. \nTactical Handgun IV\, though an extension of Tactical Handgun I\, II\, and III is different\, in that it has been designed to be to taken multiple times. Though the course of fire in Tactical Handgun I\, II\, and III is the same each time the class is taken\, Tactical Handgun IV is designed to integrate various skills in challenging drills that will differ each time the class is taken. \nThe class will consist of about 15-30 minutes of classroom time and 3.5 hours of live-fire range time \nThe class requires 150-400 rounds of ammunition depending on the drills and skills focused on. \nCourse Goal \nTo continue the structured development of the fundamental skills required to comfortably and effectively carry and use a handgun for personal defense\, building on the techniques and exercises previously practiced in Tactical Handgun I\, II\, and III in order to develop and refine those skills and add additional skills to the student’s defensive ability. \nLessons \n\nContinued development of presentation skills\nAdvanced Defensive Fire\nIntegrative skills (combining multiple elements)\n\nPrerequisites: Students taking Tactical Handgun IV should have completed Indy Arms Tactical Handgun III.
