DESCRIPTION:Basic Defensive Handgun is a practical classroom and hands-on class in the use of a handgun in self- defense. Jeff Cooper\, the legendary founder of Gunsite Academy\, is quoted as having said\, “Owning a handgun doesn’t make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician.” Although marksmanship skill is critical to the ability to use a handgun in self-defense\, marksmanship alone is not sufficient. \nThis class addresses the basic information\, skills\, and situations relating to the use of a handgun as a self-defense tool and is also taught as a Women-Only-Taught-by-a-Female-Instructor class. The class provides an overview of the legal\, psychological\, and law-enforcement response issues (These are also covered in greater depth a separate Indy Arms classroom courses; Essentials of Indiana Gun Law\, Practical and Legal Realities of Self-Defense\, and USCCA Concealed Carry) \nThis class focuses on the fundamental safety\, marksmanship and manipulation skills required to use a handgun effectively. (Carrying\, drawing\, and the associated equipment are covered in a separate Indy Arms hands-on course\, Tactical Handgun I\, II\, and III.) This course will consist of about 2 ½ hours of classroom and “dry” handling and drills\, and about 1 ½ hours of live-fire range time. The class is nominally four hours in length\, but may sometimes run a little run longer\, depending on attendance and the number of questions. \nThis class has been developed by experts on Indy Arms staff\, including nationally recognized authors and presenters\, and career firearms instructors and law-enforcement trainers. \nThe class will include the use of a rental gun at no additional cost. SUMMARY:Introduction to Shotgun
DESCRIPTION:Interested in learning how to safely shoot a pump-action shotgun? \nIntroduction to Shotgun is a basic course designed for people with little or no firearms experience. This course will provide a safe and enjoyable first exposure to long guns (shotguns) and shooting. \nThis class is divided into two sessions. The classroom session\, lasting 60 to 75 minutes\, allows students to learn the fundamentals of shotgun shooting including safety\, basic functions\, loading and unloading\, mounting\, stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control. During the live-fire session\, students will have the opportunity to handle\, load\, and fire one of our training pump-action shotguns chambered in 20 gauge and will fire up to 20 rounds of ammunition in order to build skill and competence. The course concludes with a wrap-up session in the classroom to review lessons learned and answer any questions that students may have. \nThe class is offered once a month and is the recommended first step before taking out Basic Defensive Shotgun class. SUMMARY:Tactical Rifle 1
DESCRIPTION:Tactical Rifle 1 is an informational and hands-on class in the use of the modern semi-automatic rifle as a home defense weapon and extends the training provided in Indy Arms’ Basic Defensive Rifle course. Tactical Rifle 1 moves beyond basic accuracy and safety to include use of force for home defense\, shooting from cover\, multiple target engagement\, and shooting and moving. The class is based on the most common self-defense rifles\, of which the AR15 platform is the overwhelmingly dominant example. The Ruger Mini-14 (based on the Garand platform) and the AK family of rifles (commonly but incorrectly referred to as the AK47) are also suitable for the class (if you are bringing a rifle other than an AR15 platform\, please inform Indy Arms when you register for the class). \nTactical Rifle 1 includes lecture\, dry fire and live-fire sessions and can be shot with both iron sights and with optics if those are available. This course will consist of about 2 hours of classroom material and practice\, and about 2 hours of live-fire range time. The class is nominally four hours in length\, but sometimes runs a bit longer\, based on student questions. \nStudents will shoot 200 rounds of ammunition. \nCourse Goal\n“To begin the structured development of the fundamental skills required to comfortably and effectively use a semi-auto rifle for home/personal defense\, and to provide the student with techniques and exercises to develop and refine these skills.” \nLessons \n\nBasic Rifle\, Home\, and Range Safety\nCommon Malfunctions\nSpeed loading\nMultiple shots and multiple targets\nMoving and scanning\nUse of cover\nReview and Questions\n\nPrerequisites: Students taking Tactical Rifle 1 should have an understanding of simple marksmanship\, and the basic operation of their rifle. SUMMARY:Handgun Optics
DESCRIPTION:Handgun Optics concentrates on essential skills required to use a handgun with optical sights (commonly refer to as Red Dot sights) as an effective self-defense tool. This is the perfect class if you are wanting to fully understand your optics including techniques to ‘zero’ your optic\, or are new to optics and want to make sure they are right for you. \n\nBasic marksmanship ability\, drawing and presenting to the optic\, and additional issues present with optical sights will be discussed. This class will discuss the various optics options\, pros and cons of the use of optics\, and the challenges that need to be addressed to maximize the use of these modern electronic sights. \nThe class will consist of about 2.5 hours of classroom time and 1.5 hours of live-fire range time. The class requires 100 rounds of ammunition. \nCourse Goal To provide each student with the knowledge to make an informed choice of whether to use an optic or not.  Additionally\, drills will be provided to further the student’s skills in optimizing an optics mounted handgun. \nLessons \n\nSafety\nHistory and advantages and disadvantages of optics\nChallenges to optimizing optics\nDrawing ‘to the dot’ from your carry holster or carry purse\nZeroing your optic\nBasic defensive live-fire\nScanning and simple movement\n\nPrerequisites: Students taking Handgun Optics should have an understanding of simple marksmanship\, and the basic operation of their handgun. Individuals taking this class are encouraged to have the personal handgun with optics that they intend to use/carry for personal defense\, along with a suitable outside-the-waistband holster or carry purse with a dedicated department for firearms carry. Students may make use of a provided OWB Kydex paddle holster and training gun (Glock 9mm with optic).  Indy Arms Basic Defensive Handgun\, Advanced Defensive Handgun and/or USCCA Concealed Carry Handgun are acceptable prerequisites\, as are most classes from recognized shooting schools.
