Tactical Handgun is a practical, hands-on class in the use of a handgun in self-defense. For most people who take ownership of a handgun seriously enough to practice, their experience is limited to punching holes in paper targets under static conditions. But although basic marksmanship skill is critical to the ability to use a handgun in self-defense, marksmanship alone is not sufficient.
This class addresses the basic skills and situations required to use a handgun effectively as a self-defense tool. This includes shoot/no-shoot decision making, discriminating targets, multiple-targets, low-light shooting, shooting while moving, and use of cover. It also covers rapid reloading, and clearing common malfunctions. We will also practice techniques for smoothly drawing and reholstering the firearm. The emphasis of this class is on practical skills, and legal, psychological, and law-enforcement response issues are covered in a separate Indy Arms classroom course, Fundamentals of Armed Self-Defense.
This course will consist of about four hours of classroom, including dry handling and drills, and about four hours of live-fire range time.
The class will include the use of a rental gun at no additional cost, if desired. Students will receive a detailed course handout and additional information on available resources.
“To allow the student to experience first-hand some of the real-world challenges inherent in the use of a firearm in self-defense, and to recognize and practice the skills required to deal with these challenges.”
